The brief was to create a provocative film reflecting what London means to you. From personal tales to abstract expressions, the entries came in many different shapes and sizes, but only one film could win. We are delighted to announce Sam Rowland as the winning filmmaker who will be accompanying us on our next location to Athens for Issue 4 of Boat. Screened at our launch party on May 8, Sam’s film ‘Tired of Playing Basketball’ shines an authentic light on the underground world of cage fighting in South London. Seen through the eyes of Swedish basketball player/fighter Max Nunes the film exposes a deeply personal and remarkably taciturn side to this underground scene. With both the fighters and the crowd shot in stunning live-action silence the film turns all preconceptions of futile violence on their head. We can’t wait to see what he captures for us in Athens later this year.
With a slightly more specific brief the winner of The Guardian’s Travel award was also announced on Tuesday night with Joseph Fellows film ‘Primrose Hill’. Following the journey of a lone early-morning jogger across the footpaths and canals of the city, Fellows film describes a side of London that can only exist when most of the city is sleeping. The prize for this part of the competition is a commission from Guardian Travel to produce a second film, which will also be broadcast on the Travel website.

We would like to thank both The Smalls and The Guardian for helping us organise and judge this competition, as well as a big thank you to the two beautiful winning films and everyone else who entered This London.

One of the most difficult things about running a magazine is not having the page space to include all of the really great content we find. We came across Adrian Brannan’s photo collages quite late in our work on the London issue and were instantly taken by them. Each collage is made up of hundreds of 35mm photographs, most of which are printed in his own dark room. In this world obsessed with instant gratification, Adrian’s painstaking work is refreshing and we regret that we just didn’t have the space to include him in our London issue. “Viewed from a distance, the original works are a spectacle of colour and movement. On taking a closer look, an intricate network of detail has been observed and captured. Each and every time you view a piece of Adrian’s work, new details are discovered.” We especially love the Piccadilly Escalator collage. Adrian writes: For Piccadilly Escalator, I was experimenting with building a collage whilst actually in the colour darkroom. For this one all the component prints were fresh out the drier when stuck down, I was printing each individual image exactly to suit. Check out more of Adrian’s work here.
