Luke Tonge is the designer/art director of Boat Magazine:
When I found out the next issue of Boat Magazine was Detroit I was stoked – not only because I have family there – but because I love its aesthetic. As the designer of the magazine its my job to make sure the piece not only reads well and is pleasing to the eye, but equally important is that it visually honours the city. For some readers the magazine might be the only lens they view the city through, so the responsibility on the design is significant.
The type in Detroit is to me a thing of beauty – strong, honest, straight-forward, unapologetic. A crucial part of the magazine’s character is the choice of typeface and here is where I struck gold. Not only have we got an incredible, versatile face to use in this issue, but it’s by a talented Detroit type designer we had the pleasure of meeting but the face is called, what else, Detroit.
